Originally the company’s focus and core expertise was in developing technology to provide solutions to improve processes for managing consignments and items for the logistics sector. At this time, mobile technologies and wireless data networks were reaching a stage of maturity to enable a viable system to be designed and deployed to operate in real time, pretty much anywhere in the UK.

The design ethos incorporated the management and reporting on mobile-derived operational data as well as just perfecting the in-field systems, so the systems have been built and designed to provide a complete end to end capability from day one. Competitors have generally focused on just the mobile elements and left the job of managing all the data to the client, Skillweb have always thought differently!

Another major factor that contributes to the intuitive nature of the Skillweb systems is the original design concept that mobile systems should be simple and easy to use, and not require styluses or other input devices to operate. The people using these systems could be standing on a doorstep, balancing (potentially fragile) parcels or packages, in the cold or rain, maybe even wearing gloves - and the last thing we wanted to do was make the technology device another barrier to excellent customer service. This is why Skillweb systems can all be driven by a finger, even a gloved one, and the interface is simple to read, simple to follow, and quick to learn.

In parallel with pioneering the development of cutting edge mobile track and trace systems for the mail and express delivery sector, Skillweb systems were developed to support sortation, warehousing and cross docking operations, a logical extension for the team as the specialised supply chain industry expertise was consolidating. Skillweb also sucessfully delivered an RFID based tracking solution for a major UK retailer.

The major breakthrough came for Skillweb in winning the contract to support BT supply chain operations under a multi year contract. This relationship has "formed, stormed, normed and performed" to such an extent that the original systems are now undergoing a refresh and upgrade to support the next few years challenges. This system has enabled BT to deliver operational streamlining and huge rationalisation and savings over many years.

It is testament to the Skillweb team's experience, dedication and ability to deliver, that has positioned it as a strategic partner to BT, who now offer Skillweb systems to their clients in a joint marketing agreement. Together Skillweb and BT created a solution for Jersey Post Office that is in full operation and is highly regarded on the island.

The next major step in Skillweb's evolution came when DHL selected it's platform to enable them to launch a completely new consumer-focused delivery business - DHL@Home - which has become a market leader as a result, with an impressive 1st day delivery record of 98% - well in excess of the industry average of 85%, which would not be possible without the security, reliability, real-time messaging capabilites and control that the Skillweb system provides.

Since 2005 the Skillweb core platform and business systems have been enhanced and adapted to solve many other varying and complex problems in a far wider range of operations across a variety of enterprise sectors including retail, manufacturing and healthcare. This has led to the rationalisation of the developed solutions into defined product sets, aimed specifically at the chosen vertical markets of Delivery, Supply Chain, Mobile Workforce and Healthcare.

Skillweb chose to differentiate these products by launching the new product brand Houndit, promoting affordable best of breed products for rapid and painless deployment to suit a wide range of business needs. Houndit products are genuine off-the-shelf, configure-and-use systems to suit many business needs.

Skillweb is delighted in 2009 to have gained approval under the NHS IGSOC security approval programme for system security and data integrity, enabling it to handle patient data. This means that Skillweb are the proven standard for any organisation that has data security as a paramount imperative.

Now celebrating it's 10th anniversary, looking to the future Skillweb is focusing the core of its business activities on custom design and build projects, enterprise web transactional systems & portals and next generation real time location systems. Skillweb will maintain product enhancement programmes to advance the Houndit product portfolio, whilst also undertaking R&D in conjunction with its customers and key target organisations.

84% of Skillweb staff is technical, with 60% being full time development resources. All technical staff are extremely experienced and accredited at the highest levels.

Skillweb R&D activity is currently focused on pin-point accurate, real time asset location and movement systems, to enable flexible space and storage allocation, enhance just in time production facilities, reverse logistics, enhanced two-way customer communication and supporting a variety of personal security applications.
