Technology
In this edition we move away from RFID into wireless technology and touch the sensitive subject of security. For those of you with wireless capability already installed, are you vulnerable to attack / or rather leaving your front door open to the opportunist hacker / thief? For those of you about to install please ensure you don’t leave your front door open. The lesson was bought home to me the other day, I had a visitor and we were discussing a project and he offered to show me a presentation he had created. However it was on the server back in his office. Not to worry he said I’ll download it and sure enough he did. However he did it across the network of the company who work in the shared offices below us, his PC picking up their network simply and easily. Needless to say we didn’t surf their network and see what we could access, however it looks as though their sales are up again this quarter!
So if you are responsible for installing wireless networks or you are using a network and have concerns about unauthorised access to your data then you need to consider:
- Usability – clever wireless networks should balance the workload across the available access points
- Management – modern networks are self-healing, so that when an access point fails the others automatically increase power output and cover the gap the failure creates
- Security – you need a system that detects, classifies, and contains security breaches; ideally you should know within seconds if there is an intruder and then be able to locate it. Again modern solutions should have the ability to locate (yes – geo-position rogue access points)
- Mobility – finally you need a solution that enables users to move from access point to access point without calls dropping or delays occurring.
In conclusion, wireless networks are proliferating and if yours are implemented without due care you might be leaving your front door open.
