How Do You Achieve Total Visibility of Your Supply Chain?
Proof of delivery (POD), consignment tracking and asset tracking are becoming ubiquitous supply chain products. Magazines are full of business solutions designed to improve distribution within the supply chain. The last mile is becoming clearer; collection and delivery is no longer a case of trucks turning left out of the gate and returning (hopefully) having completed their deliveries. In the bad old days, one used to see hundreds of trucks parked up in lay-bys waiting for the clock to tick over and overtime kick-in. In the bad old days customers didn't know when to expect their deliveries, today most retailers give delivery windows and penalise for late deliveries. It would appear we are making progress.
Or are we?
We are all consumers, most people get goods delivered to our home and yet we still talk about failed deliveries, waiting endlessly for someone to turn up and then discovering they have the wrong part. The same story is still prevalent in our business life, significant numbers of all deliveries are B2B, and we plan on those deliveries failing or at best being late. We stockpile, we over order, we add contingency, we cost ourselves money. So while we think we are solving the problems associated with visibility of the Supply Chain the simple truth is that we must grade ourselves "could do better".
So what can we do?
The simple answer is to apply already proven business techniques of continuous improvement. Measure how good your last mile distribution, B2C or B2B, is; then find out what's going wrong and improve it. Sounds simple, but is it expensive? It doesn't have to be. The answer is to start simply and mature, start with the customer, the end user. Make them a promise, "I'll deliver tomorrow afternoon".Then make a plan, identifying in that plan key aspects, stock, on the truck by, through Oxford by. Then measure and report and manage.
The Key is Promise Management
The answer is to turn your drivers into customer care managers, set them targets to deliver to the promises you make, find out why you don't keep them and do something about it. However don't re-invent the wheel, someone is already out there with the experience and expertise to help you. Skillweb, experts in Supply Chain Visibility, can help you implement a promise management solution. Skillweb will provide the tools and expertise to help you create a simple delivery plan to meet your promise to your customer. Skillweb can then provide all the tools and reporting systems to capture delivery events in near real-time for analysis and reporting. Analysis of exceptions will enable businesses to improve processes and working practices. Real-time reporting will enable you to forewarn your customer of missed promises (we would all rather bad news to no news!). Subsequent analysis will enable trends to be identified and challenges met before they become issues.
